Live Resin – What Makes it Special?

With the wide range of cannabis products available on the market today, it’s hard to get a definitive idea of what’s really out there. It seems like every week there’s new extractions and concentrates that enter the market. Seemingly out of nowhere at times. Now  introducing Live Resin, the fresh way to smoke to get your concentrate fix.

What is Live Resin?

Live Resin is a fairly new concentrate on the market. And for good reasons. The technology and science behind creating a live resin extract may seem like something out of the future. Unless you have a cryogenic freezer, odds are you won’t be make any at home.

Live Resin is made by cryogenically freezing a freshly cut marijuana plant at temperatures below -180 C. This process is often labeled “full plant” or “full spectrum” because it involves the entire plant, including the flowers, leaves, branches, and even stalk.

So what’s the point of taking your flower through a cryogenic freezer you may ask. Well that’s a great question. If you truly enjoy the full flavour of cannabis and all it’s properties, using a cryogenic freezer is the only way to prevent the loss of terpenes.

Terpenes are fragrant oils that give cannabis its aromatic diversity. They’re what give Blueberry its signature berry smell, Sour Diesel  its funky fuel flavor, and Lavender its sweet floral aroma. These oils are secreted in the flower’s sticky resin glands, the same ones that produce THC, CBD , and other cannabinoids . Terpenes are by no means unique to cannabis; they can be found in many other herbs, fruits, and plants as well.

Because terpenes are responsible for the sometimes pungent odor of cannabis , it has a much more full-bodied aroma. In addition, live resin delivers greater medical efficacy because it provides more of these molecules that have been proven to fight cancer and reduce systemic inflammation.

Although saving those lovely terpenes clearly has many benefits, being cost effective is not one of them. The cryogenic process in making live resin is an expensive one that involves pricey equipment and a highly trained technician.

With all the benefits of preserving terpenes, it’s no surprise that live resin is growing in popularity extremely fast.
